Detailed Tree Inspection - DTI

Using Wood Testing Systems

New to the industry in 2025!

Introduction

Join Tree Life for this workshop at the historic Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, a venue renowned for its rich heritage and beautiful surroundings. This workshop provides a comprehensive understanding of specialised wood testing technology, essential for assessing the internal condition of tree stems. Participants will review tree biology, visual tree assessment methodology, and the expectations for professional tree inspectors (PTI). You'll gain hands-on experience with wood testing systems, learning to determine the most appropriate system to use, its application, and how to interpret the results effectively. The one-day workshop offers advanced training in detailed tree inspection, enabling participants to specify necessary management options for high value trees.

Workshop Overview

Limited to 8 attending participants, this workshop will consolidate knowledge of Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) and review the expectations for PTI inspectors, emphasising on the information they should provide to consultants conducting detailed tree inspections. You'll engage in hands-on experience with wood testing systems, showcasing their capabilities and limitations firsthand. This will help you determine the most appropriate system to use, its application, and how to interpret the results effectively.

The one-day workshop aims to provide advanced training in detailed tree inspection using the most up-to-date systems, listed below. Participants will gain practical experience inspecting trees and interpreting the results necessary for managing trees. This forms part of a defensible system, building on the skills acquired in the PTI course. While the workshop does not focus on report writing, the presentation of findings will be examined, and advice will be provided.

Key Topics Covered

  • Visual Assessment: Identifying when there is cause for concern about potential internal defects in trees that require further investigation.
  • Wood Testing Systems:
    • Computerised Tomography:
      • Electronic
      • Sonic
    • Micro Drill
    • Core Sampler with Fractometer 1

Who is the Workshop Ideal For?

These are desirable, you do NOT have to hold a PTI qualification:

  • Professional Tree Inspectors (PTI): Individuals who currently hold or are looking to undertake the PTI certification.
  • Arboricultural Consultants: Professionals providing expert advice on tree care and management who may have access to and experience using some of the equipment but want to gain a better understanding of the others.
  • Tree Managers: Those responsible for managing aging tree stock, including veteran and ancient trees.
  • Tree Enthusiasts: Individuals seeking to broaden their knowledge of tree health assessment and decision-making processes.

Pre-requisites for the Workshop

To get the most out of this workshop, it's helpful if you have:

  • A solid understanding of tree biology, including the tree as an undamaged, self-optimized structure.
  • Knowledge of biological and mechanical weaknesses, pathology, legislation, and remedial options along with their likely implications.
  • Familiarity with the British Standard 3998 Recommendations for Tree work.
  • Specific arboricultural knowledge that affects the detection and measurement of tree defects and the recommendation of control measures to reduce risk.

This workshop is competency-based, so we recommend that participants have at least a Level 2 arboricultural qualification or equivalent, along with some experience in conducting tree surveys and inspections.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of detailed tree inspection and current industry trends employing wood testing systems.
  • Comprehend the theory behind wood testing systems.
  • Recommend appropriate wood testing systems for various scenarios.
  • Prescribe the use of each available system with sufficient detail.
  • Conduct detailed tree inspections using wood testing systems.
