BS5837 One Day Workshop

The final revision for the updated BS5837 is due in spring 2025!

The aim of the course is to provide a program that allows attendees to go away with sufficient working knowledge of BS5837

Course content:

  • Undertaking a tree survey
  • Determining a category of tree retention
  • Identifying the preliminary constraints posed by trees and preparing an initial statement of arboricultural impacts
  • Producing an Arboricultural Impact Assessment
  • Producing a Tree Protection Plan and an Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS)
  • Each attendee will be provided with templates and other relevant information which they can take away

Guide to the day:

The day will start with an in depth look at the use of BS5837 and progress through the preparation of a plan showing the constraints posed by trees, an arboricultural impact assessment, a draft tree protection plan and discussion on a final development design for a real site.

After lunch the attendees will prepare an AMS and a tree protection plan appropriate to their final design with the guidance of the course tutor.

Please note:

As this standard is in the process of being reviewed, our BS537 workshop will be taught to the current standard at the time of the course and all attending in the year prior to the upcoming BS5837 review being published will receive an update once the updated version of this standard is released. This update will be emailed out to all attendees, who will be able to ask questions by responding to the email.

Equipment Required:

It is essential that attendees come with a laptop computer and a copy of BS5837 with you is desirable and would also assist you on the day. Attendees will be using the laptop to write a report as part of the workshop and will be working with a template in Microsoft Word format. Note taking materials.

Equipment Provided:

In addition to the usual course handouts, Tree Life will provide USB sticks with the course files and can also email the course files if your laptop cannot use a USB stick for any reason. Tree Life will supply a 1:500 scale ruler, a drawing compass, and coloured pencil crayons for use during this course.
