English for Arboriculturists

Language is defined as

“the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way.”

The whole point of communicating with someone else is to pass on some information about something, something we want, something we feel, something they need to know, or we want to tell them. Perhaps something they are paying us to tell them about?

The less we understand and are able to use language, the poorer we all are at communicating. Remember that communication involves the recipient as much as the sender; communication without understanding is one-sided and rather pointless. So, the comprehension of what is said is just as important as the ability to say it.

Sometimes we have the bonus of actually being in the other person’s company, and a great many things can be communicated by the way we speak, as much as by the words we use. Intonation, facial expression, and body language are all ways of communicating, and when those aspects are missing, as they are in emails, text messages, letters, reports etc, and both parties are reliant on only words, the choice of those words, and the way they are put together becomes all the more important.
